Oaxaca Economy

Objectives:

  • Students will learn how economic growth is dependent upon a number of factors.
  • To learn how education affects economy.
  • To discover the importance of agriculture to the economy.

Suggested Resources/Materials:

  • Paper and pencil
  • Detailed maps of Oaxaca state showing its physical characteristics  (climate, vegetation, rivers, mountains),
  • Watercolors or tempera paints
  • Colored markers
  • Chart or heavy duty paper
  • Travel brochures and web sites.  (See Links below)
  • Paper and pencil, 

The lesson:

Before beginning the study of Oaxaca’s economy, have the students complete a KWHL Chart. K= What Do We Know; W= What Do We Want To Know; H= How Do We Find Out; L= What We Learned). This activity can be done as en entire class or in small groups. If done in small groups, the groups will share their charts with the class as a whole.

questions:

  • Name the most important source of income for the state of Oaxaca. What areas of the state are most impacted?
  • Why is coffee so important to the economy and what other types of fruits and vegetables are grown. What purpose do they serve? Is productivity high or low and why?
  • How do education and training programs affect the economy and the indigenous population?
  • Describe the factors influencing the migration from the rural areas to the cities.

suggested activities:

  • Make a list of ideas suggesting how to bring tourists into the area. From that list create a travel brochure.
  • Research how organic foods are grown and make a list of other types of organically grown foods in Oaxaca.
  • Make a mural of what types of activities tourists might find at the beach.  What kind of activities would you want do at the beach?
  • Have a round-table discussion regarding the pros and cons of migration.

assessment:

In addition to paper and pencil tests, teachers could use individual or small group projects, oral reports, mental maps or structured overviews for assessment.
